Build-Out Method

Step 1 of my “Build-Out” process is to print and then mount the art as shown using American made Logan brand equipment and cutters. Archival grade 4 ply product chosen for the custom double mat cuts along with 3/16’th inch backerboard for the mount.

Step 2 of Build-Out displaying how art is next wrapped in custom built wooden frame. In this example a thick piece of American Chestnut with quarter cut 3” borders was chosen to accompany the work. A recessed step-down bevel was used for the rabbet and the piece was finished in Rubio Monocoat to bring out the natural beauty of the wood grain.

A final and important stage of the Build-Out would be applying the dust sealing. This ensures that no foreign debris or particles get into the art and is a hallmark of any professional frame job.

A crucial part of the Build-Out process is the finishing aspect of the work. An important juncture, and usually a difficult one as there are many different ways to go. It all comes down to artistic taste, and what will flow with the piece in question. Whether it be a gloss, matte, or stain finish-each one is a puzzle waiting to be solved!
